rwilts Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Hi, when i last had mine serviced 2 monhs ago dealer was at paines to say that tyres had to be reinforced. He said that some places would say not needed but he said due to weight of vehicle they are a must! Quote
RussT Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 I put 4 new tyres on last year which where not reinforced and I have had no problems with them.I do not, do a lot of motaway driving I mainly drive on th A & B roads and have not noticed any difference in handling or performance in any way. It makes you wonder who is right ! As every one as differnt opinions on this subject. RussT Quote
charles Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 The maximum load and tire pressure is specificated on the tyres and should be enough for the galaxy. Normally it would no problem to fit ordinary tyres. However I noticed when pushing to the car, there there may be some more sideway movement (noticable with cornering). Quote
Andrew T Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 You should check with your insurance company. By deviating from the original specification they may consider that you have modified your vehicle, and charge you a higher premium. If it was to be discovered after an accident they may decline to pay out (in the unlikely event that they noticed) Quote
iainkirk Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Your insurance company WILL notice. When they send assessors out, that is one of the FIRST things they will look at - tread depth, tyre damage and correct type of tyre. Wrong tyre = modification = NO INSURANCE! I know this to be true. Guest Boggler Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 My Gal was fitted with Continental CH90's from new, I've replaced 2 or 3 sets so far (120k miles), as far as I'm aware these are not reinforced, but as they were the standard fitting from new I wouldn't see an Insurance Co having a problem with this. A friend of mine, who runs a 2.8 Gal went to his Insurers and posed the question of whether they need be reinforced, he was told "what does it say in the owners handbook?", the owners handbook doesn't state reinforced, so his Insurers said "there's the answer then, they are not required" Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 ooh! dancing with the devil there Boggler  I've been banned from web sites for saying that! but I have to agree with you, I have only seen it in writing once stateing that reinforced tyres are fitted on a Galaxy, this being when the optional 17'' rims are fitted and then the Ford booklet states the tyre size as 225/45 R17 94 RF on all the other wheel and tyre combinations it does not have the RF letters in the tyre sizes Quote
MrT Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 The tyres need to be rated to the weight of the vehicle and to get this weight rating they may need to be re-inforced. I believe the correct rating for the Galaxy is 97 which is 730Kg. So your tyre should read something like 225/55 ZR15 97W Quote
gazza007 Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 It all depends on what you have fitted & wheel size. It's all about load on the tyre.I have conti's CH90's which are re-inforced 15" 205/60's Quote
Guest Boggler Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 FredT, I'm confused (not unusual  ) dancing with the Devil for saying what? gazza007, mine are 215/60 R15, no RF (unless I've never noticed, that confusion again  ) Quote
Guest fredt Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 FredT, I'm confused (not unusual  ) dancing with the Devil for saying what? On anotherFord/Galaxy web site I was banned for questioning the fact that Galaxy's need to have reinforced tyres! it does seem to be a topic of disscusion that gets people rather heated! Me I run 225/45 ZR 17's NON REINFORCED! and yes my insurance company knows of all my mods, well nearly :D Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 I think it's something to do with build dates - the 16" tyres fitted to post-facelift models DO need to be re-inforced, as stated in the handbook (well, it is in the handbook I have). Pre-facelift models - it seems to vary from what I have read/heard. Suppose that it should be on the tyre pressure sticker wherever that may be (B-pilar?) Quote
Dally Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Both my previous 2002 model and current 2003 came with reinforced tyres out of the factory. Would not risk anything less just for the sake of saving a few quid. Just feel that bit more comfortable when my family are on board! BTW : - That's my personal opinion. Quote
Guest Boggler Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Who's "saving a few quid"?, have you seen the price of a 215/60 15 CH90 lately? , the owner of my local tyre fitters is so glad to see me he'll even move his Rolls to get my Gal in  On the subject of Tyre safety, I got a puncture in Belgium the other week, and didn't know about it until somebody pointed it out in a Hypermarket in France, this was front passenger side, on good ol' CH90's. Guest T120 Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Is'nt to do with it being an MPV and can carry up to 7 people, as to why the tyres are Reinforced? Quote
DIY Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 I got my Continental 215/60 15 CH90 for Quote
ben hudson Posted August 18, 2004 Author Report Posted August 18, 2004 Hi,Thanks for all the repliesI have asked the insurance company and they say they do not have any requirements for reinforced tyres  I then emailed www.fordpartsuk.com and they said that reinforced tyres are a must. My handbook and Haynes manual does not say anything about reinforced tyres.my local dealer was no help at all, i have spoken on the phone to two other dealers in the area and they said i could fit what i wanted, as they could not find any information to detail the tyre spec. There are three Gals at work and no of them have reinforced tyres fitted I think the only thing to do is fit reinforced to be as safe as possibleBen Quote
Guest gritrash Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 I have looked in my handbook (dated 04/2003, supplied with late '03 model) and the tyre pressures page casts some light on the subject. According to this manual, vehicles supplied with 195/60 R16 or 205/55 R16 tyres are not reinforced, whilst 215/55 R16 and 225/45 R17 tyres are reinforced. I guess that this is what would be supplied from factory, therefore the expected replacement specification also.Any help? Quote
Guest Boggler Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 To DIY, that wouldn't be Maidenhead Tyre and Exhaust, would it? Thats where I go and what I pay, after having the first set done at Quickfit for Quote
iainkirk Posted August 18, 2004 Report Posted August 18, 2004 Prices are on the up for tyres too.... blo*dy oil price.... Quote
DIY Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 Boggler - No It was Humphries, Tyre & Exhaust Centre in Wokingham - but Humphries in Shinfield wanted Quote
Another?Maybe! Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 KwikFit do a pricematch deal so find someone who offers you a cheap deal and take it back to KW!! My Gal, which I have just passed on, had Dunlop 2002s on, which have 'reinforced' writen on the sidewall. You need reinforced because Gal is like a Transit van. Imagine carrying 7 rugby players + their luggage, that's the possibility the tyres have to be prepared to cope with, hence 'reinforced'. I suppose, during the lifetime of the vehicle, if you know it will carry much less weight you could get away with 'less' tyres but you don't know what happens if you trade it on, would you be responsible? Also, code on sidewall includes a 'speed rating' as I found out when KW said had correct match in stock but when (genuine) fitter actually saw tyre said 'in stock' didn't match speed rating and needed to order correct tyre in to match. Just be careful in saving money. Quote
Another?Maybe! Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 If you get your 'proper' replacement tyres for much less than Quote
djacks42 Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 My gal came with a 5-set of Goodyear GT2 215/65R 15 which are unique to Chrysler Voyager I think. When I had the frt offside blowout back at Easter I had no choice but to go for the same again. Insurers weren't bothered at non-standard size and non-reinf. I'm in two minds since the blowout took out a palm size piece of sidewall (no drama stopping though), but then the Voyager is a heavier vehicle and tyres should be suited to the weight. Quote
